Extraction, purification and applications of curcumin from plant materials-A comprehensive review

Curcumin is a safe substance that used as food cosmetic additive and pharmaceutical product. Obtaining pure curcumin from plant sources very important for fundamental research well the above applications. Efficient extraction purification methods, which meet green chemistry criteria including safety, environment-friendliness, economic requirements, process efficiency are needed. This review provides an up-to-date comprehensive summary of various methods materials, its applications in food, cosmetics fields. Many different ranging conventional techniques (e.g. soxhlet extraction, maceration solvent extraction) to advanced technologies ultrasound-assisted microwave-assisted enzyme-assisted supercritical liquid etc.) have been exploited obtain materials. Various other substances co-exist with crude extracts. techniques, alone or combination, investigated isolation extracts commercially available curcumin. These include column chromatography, semi-preparative high performance chromatography) supplementary modern high-speed counter-current fluid chromatography). To recover selection apposite routes based on novel (both purification) maximize efficiency, decrease use toxic solvent, reduce processing time energy consumption. Additionally, potential commercial uses reviewed.
